Process Analysis and Redesign is the second of three courses in the program Fundamentals of Business Process Management.


This course includes four weeks of learning, covering the third and fourth phases of the BPM lifecycle.

  • Week 1: Qualitative process analysis
  • Week 2: Quantitative process analysis
  • Week 3: Transformative process redesign
  • Week 4: Transactional process redesign.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • apply a range of qualitative and quantitative techniques to analyse the performance of business processes
  • assess the impact of business process changes
  • identify and analyse business improvement opportunities based on business process models
  • apply the knowledge and skills acquired holistically on a real-life business problem (when completing the optional project).


In this course you have the opportunity to complete:

  • summary quizzes to check and test your learning
  • a project that applies your learning to a realistic scenario.


You can explore the material and further your learning by completing a peer reviewed project based on a realistic scenario. To successfully complete the project, the learning content you need is contained in courses one and two.



You should spend 2–4 hours a week on this course. It depends on your familiarity with the material and your level of engagement. This includes:

  • activities
  • summary quizzes
  • project work
  • optional reading.

Software requirements

In this course, you’ll learn how to apply basic concepts and methods of BPM using the BIMP Process Simulator, which is available free of charge.


Certificate of participation

If you pass the summary quizzes you will receive a certificate of participation. Completion of the project is not required in order to receive this certificate.

Professor of Business Process Management at QUT. Academic Director for corporate programs and partnerships for the Information Systems School at QUT. A Principal Researcher at the National ICT Australia.

Marlon Dumas

Adjunct Professor at QUT. Professor of Software Engineering at the University of Tartu, where he leads the Software Engineering group.


Marcello and Marlon, together with Jan Mendling and Hajo Reijers, co-authored the most comprehensive textbook in BPM, Fundamentals of Business Process Management, which has influenced the curriculum of over 100 universities worldwide.

They have taught BPM for over a decade in more than a dozen universities internationally, and trained hundreds of practitioners.

Their research interests in BPM include process modelling and consolidation, process automation and process mining.

Program Summary

The BPM program introduces the fundamental principles, techniques and tools for actively managing business processes. It walks you through the six phases of the BPM lifecycle. You’ll learn:

  • mainstream techniques and tools for process identification, discovery, analysis, improvement, automation and monitoring
  • how to apply these techniques and tools to a range of examples and case studies that show the power of BPM in practice
  • how to improve business processes one process at a time.


Verified exam

A verified exam opportunity will be offered to you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the three courses:

  1. Fundamentals of BPM: Process identification and discovery (BPM01) 
  2. Fundamentals of BPM: Process analysis and redesign (BPM02)
  3. Fundamentals of BPM: Process implementation and monitoring (BPM03).
