OLD CBA SPOC: Fundamentals of BPM

Description

This course introduces the fundamentals of business process management (BPM) by working through each phase of the BPM lifecycle.

You’ll learn mainstream techniques and tools for process identification, discovery, analysis, improvement, automation and monitoring. You’ll also see how to apply these techniques and tools to a range of examples and case studies that show the power of BPM in practice.

 

Course outline

This course includes a getting started week, followed by six weeks of learning. Each week of learning will focus on a phase of the BPM life cycle.

  • Getting started: Pre-course activities and information to help you prepare for the course.
  • Week 1: Introduction and identification
  • Week 2: Discovery
  • Week 3: Analysis
  • Week 4: Redesign
  • Week 5: Automation
  • Week 6: Monitoring and conclusions
  • Final week: Submission of summary quizzes and the optional project.

 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Identify business processes within an organization, study their boundaries and interrelations, and prioritize their management using different criteria
  • Document business processes at different levels of detail using contemporary business process modeling techniques
  • Apply qualitative and quantitative techniques to analyse the performance of business processes and to assess the impact of business process changes
  • Identify and analyse business improvement opportunities based on business process models
  • Use IT effectively to build process automation solutions that realise the benefits of process improvement
  • Exploit the power of big data to build insightful analytics that lead to actionable process knowledge
  • Apply the knowledge and skills acquired holistically on a real-life business problem (when completing the optional project)

 

Assessment

In this course you’ll have the opportunity to complete:

  • summary quizzes to check and test your learning
  • a project that applies your learning to a realistic scenario

 

Certificate of participation

If you pass the summary quizzes you will receive a certificate of participation. Completion of the project is not required in order to receive this certificate.

 

Optional project

As an optional opportunity to explore the material and further your learning, you can complete a peer reviewed project based on a realistic scenario. This project is not required in order to receive the certificate of participation.

 

Workload

You should spend about 2-4 hours per week on this course, depending on your familiarity with the material and your level of engagement.  This includes:

Facilitators

Marcello La Rosa

is Professor of Business Process Management at QUT and Academic Director for corporate programs and partnerships for the Information Systems School at QUT. He is also a Principal Researcher at the National ICT Australia.

 

Marlon Dumas

is an Adjunct Professor at QUT, and Professor of Software Engineering at the University of Tartu, where he leads the Software Engineering group.

 

Marcello and Marlon, together with Jan Mendling and Hajo Reijers, co-authored the most comprehensive textbook in BPM, Fundamentals of Business process Management, which has influenced the curriculum of over 100 universities worldwide.

They have taught BPM for over a decade in more than a dozen universities internationally, and trained hundreds of practitioners.

Their research interests in BPM include process modelling and consolidation, process automation and process mining.
